The new generation of the Mazda CX-5 represents a design evolution that brings welcomed improvements to the interior and exterior styling along with enhanced equipment levels.
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is available in 12 different variants across five model designations, including a new Touring version that fills a gap in the range between the Maxx Sport and GT models.
Mazda has carried over the existing drivetrains for the 2017 CX-5. There is still a choice of three engines including a 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G petrol and a 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D diesel, mated to either a 6-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual or 6-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission, and in all-wheel and front-wheel drive.
The base 2.0-litre petrol engine will only be available in a front-wheel drive Maxx and Maxx Sport variants while the larger 2.5-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines will power the all-wheel drive models.
The new model retains similar proportions to the outgoing CX-5 with only minor alterations in exterior measurements, importantly the wheelbase remains at 2700mm.
Mazda will offer the new CX-5 with a revised colour palette including the new Soul Crystal Red, an update of the Soul Red, as well as Eternal Blue, Machine Grey, Sonic Silver, Snowflake White Pearl, Titanium Flash, Deep Crystal Blue and Jet Black.
In a great move, the Touring model will feature an artificial leather and suede combination for the seat trim – a great alternative to leather. It is disappointing this material combination can't be optioned on other models in the range.
Pleasingly, rear passengers will enjoy improved comfort, the 2017 CX-5 will have proper rear air vents in all models from the Maxx Sport up.
A major oversight is the absence of smartphone mirroring technology, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Car Conversation is of the opinion this technology is not just a convenience feature but one that improves safety.
Mazda has done well to keep the pricing stable. There are some very minor increases across the range that is easily offset by the addition standard equipment. The entry model FWD CX-5 Maxx with a six-speed manual will be priced from $28,690, with the range topping out at $49,990 for the fully-loaded CX-5 Akera diesel AWD.
