After 54 years of car manufacturing in Australia Toyota has decided to mark the milestone with the release of the Camry Commemorative Edition, a hybrid model based on the Camry Atara SL sedan.
Only 54 of these Commemorative Editions will be produced which reflects the number of years Toyota have been producing cars here.
The significance of the Camry as the basis for the special edition lies in the fact that it has had the biggest impact on the local and export markets. To add to this, Toyota believes this hybrid is the most technically advanced mass-produced car in the country.
The upcoming eighth-generation Camry will be a fully imported model manufactured in Japan.
The Camry is now in its 24th consecutive year as the best-selling mid-sized car in Australia, a title which the car has held since 1994.
Toyota Australia President Dave Buttner thought that the special edition Camry is a poignant reminder of six Camry generations built at Port Melbourne and then Altona.
Mr Buttner also said: "One of the 54 Commemorative Camrys will be kept by Toyota Australia and another sent for display at the TMC Museum in Japan, confirming our parent company's high regard for the employee commitment, local engineering input and quality achieved in 54 years of local manufacture."
The top-of-the-line Camry Atara SL hybrid was specifically chosen for the Commemorative Edition due to its technically advanced features.
To differentiate the Commemorative Edition, the car will feature an exclusive combination of metallic silver paint with a black roof, something which has never been seen on any Camry sedan built in Australia.
Other exclusive features include a sporty red garnish along the lower lip of the grille, blue illumination in the footwell, a sport mesh interior, Camry-branded scuff plates plus Commemorative Edition floor mats and badging.
The Commemorative Camry will use the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, 105kW electric drive motor and electronic continuously variable transmission found on the current model. This will deliver a maximum power output of 151kW.
A five-star safety rating has been awarded to all Camry’s due to the inclusion of standard equipment including seven airbags, reversing camera, vehicle stability and traction control, and anti-skid brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution.
The Commemorative Edition Camry will also include a pre-collision safety system with autonomous braking, active cruise control, automatic high beam, lane departure alert and rear cross-traffic alert to deliver a well-rounded safety package.
Other standard inclusions extend to premium satellite navigation with SUNA traffic updates, JBL audio, leather-accented seats, ISOFIX attachment points, front and rear corner parking sensors and a wireless phone charger for compatible phones.
The Camry Commemorative Edition will be available to 54 buyers at a price of $41,150 (plus on-road costs) which represents a small premium of $710 more than the standard hybrid Camry Atara SL.
