Sometimes rumours circulating on the internet are true, the 2018 BMW M5 Competition has been revealed after being leaked online last week, the performance sedan will arrive in Australia later this year with a starting price of $229,900 plus on-road costs.
The M5 Competition will use a slightly uprated version of the standard car’s 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. In the Competition, the V8 pumps out 460kW at 6000rpm, an increase of 19kW while the torque figure remains at 750Nm, available from 1,800 to 5,800rpm.
BMW is claiming a 0 to 100km/h time of 3.3 seconds an improvement of 0.1 seconds. It can reach 200km/h in 10.8 seconds, a whole 0.3 faster than the M5. The top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h but can stretch to 305km/h with the M Driver's Package fitted.
In the event any potential owner gives a rats, fuel consumption comes in at a very respectable 10.8L/100km on the combined cycle.
Revisions have been made to the suspension setup, the M5 Competition will ride 7mm lower with a new spring and damper tune.
An increased negative camber on the front axle, while at the rear toe links are now attached via racing-style ball joints instead of rubber mounts.
Visually differentiating the Competition from the regular M5 will be a high-gloss black trim selection which includes exterior mirror caps, M gills on the front flanks, kidney grilles, rear bumper cover and rear spoiler.
There’s also 20-inch alloy wheels, the boot lid logo will now feature ‘Competition’ lettering for the first time while the exhaust tips are finished in black chrome.
On the inside, highlights include black seatbelts with striped BMW M stitching, M logo piped floor mats and an ‘M Competition’ graphic shown in the instrument cluster.
Local specifications and pricing are set to be confirmed closer to the car’s Australian launch in the second half of 2018.
