A new variant has been added to the 2018 BMW X1 range, the new base-model sDrive18i will arrive in February with a starting price of $45,900 plus on-road costs.
The X1 sDrive18i will utilise a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine currently found in various Mini models. It develops 100kW of power and 220Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
BMW quotes a 0-100km/h sprint time of 9.6 seconds and 5.4L/100km of fuel consumption on the combined cycle.
For an entry-level model, the sDrive18i is reasonably well equipped. A 6.5-inch infotainment touchscreen featuring iDrive6, an instrument panel with 5.7-inch TFT display, Driving Assistant including speed limit info, lane departure and forward collision warning are all standard.
There’s also 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic tailgate, foldable rear seats with 40:20:40 split, LED headlights with cornering lights, high-beam assist, front and rear park distance control, cruise control with braking function, parking assistant and a rear view camera.
Effectively, the X1 sDrive18i with its $4000 price advantage over the sDrive18d is an exercise in badge engineering only serving to lower the entry price to the range.
