BMW has released details and images of the new 2018 X3.

The new X3 is a slightly bigger SUV than the outgoing model. Measuring 4708mm long, 1891mm wide and 1676mm tall, depending on which figures you work off - the new model is up to 60mm longer, 10mm wider and 1mm taller than its predecessor. The wheelbase has also grown by 54mm to now measure a generous 2864mm.

The new exterior borrows design cues from other SUVs in BMW’s range and will fit nicely into the lineup.

Up front is the newest interpretation of the famous kidney grille and for the first time on an X model, foglamps featuring a hexagonal design.

At the back, there’s a new light cluster, a downward-sloping roof spoiler and twin exhaust tailpipes.

There have been significant updates to the interior. A new 10.2-inch touchscreen, a new steering wheel and improved cabin storage headline the changes. There are also new interior materials that improve the presentation of the cabin.

A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, similar to Audi’s digital cockpit can be optioned, as can a full-colour head-up display.

BMW will offer three model line packages; xLine, Luxury Line, and M Sport, that will enable buyers to bring some personalisation to their X3.

Plenty of powertrain options will be available with four and six-cylinder turbocharged engines in both petrol and diesel.

The highlight of the range will no doubt be the X3 M40i. This will be the hero model until the brand produces an X3 M. The M40i will be powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six that can produce 265kW of power and 500Nm of torque. BMW claims the X3 M40i can cover the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.8 seconds.

As BMW make the transition from ultimate driving machine to passenger conveyance, the new X3 will feature BMW’s Personal CoPilot semi-autonomous driver assistance systems which include active cruise control with stop & go function, steering and lane control assistant and lane change assistant.

This all-new generation of the X3 is long overdue, the outgoing model is running out of puff and only substantial discounting has kept it relevant in the face of better offerings from other premium manufacturers.

Let’s start a Car Conversation, does the new X3 offer enough to take the fight to Audi and Mercedes?
