Jaguar have released details of its upcoming four-cylinder F-TYPE sports car.
The four-cylinder engine option will be the F-TYPE’s new entry point but will also be available in the higher-spec R-Dynamic grades.
Pricing for the entire range has yet to be finalised, however, Jaguar have confirmed the new four-cylinder F-TYPE will have a starting price of $107,300 plus on-road costs.
It’s not exactly cheap, but it is a significantly lower starting price point than that of the current range.
The four-cylinder F-TYPE will be powered by Jaguar’s 2.0-litre turbocharged Ingenium petrol engine. For the F-TYPE, it will be tuned to output 221kW and 400Nm.
Performance figures look competitive with acceleration from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 249km/h.
Jaguar claim it is the most powerful four-cylinder unit ever offered in one of its production cars.
“The 221kW Ingenium petrol engine is engineered to deliver a compelling blend of performance, refinement and efficiency. Cutting-edge technologies including electrohydraulic intake valve lift control, integrated exhaust manifold and a twin-scroll turbocharger with ceramic ball bearings make this the most advanced petrol engine we've ever produced,” says Ron Lee, Engineering Director of Powertrain at Jaguar Land Rover.
The purists will bemoan the lack of a manual transmission option. The four-cylinder F-TYPE will send power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed Quickshift automatic from ZF.
The Ingenium engine hasn’t just been dropped in, there is a bespoke chassis tune to ensure the car’s ride and handling characteristics are not compromised.
Also assisting with the car's handling is a weight reduction of 52kg over 250kW V6 model, which slightly improves weight distribution and makes this the lightest F-TYPE yet.
The four-cylinder F-TYPE will be differentiated from its V6 and V8 siblings by a single tailpipe and lightweight 18-inch wheels.
The new F-TYPE four-cylinder goes on sale in Australia from Q4 2017.
