The all-new 2018 Jeep Compass has arrived in Australia, this second-generation SUV has undergone extensive restyling to incorporate the design language of the larger Grand Cherokee.
For 2018 the Jeep Compass is available in four trim levels: Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk. There’s also the choice of 2WD and 4WD with both petrol and diesel engine options. The range opens with a price of $28,850 plus on-road costs for the front drive Sport variant with a manual gearbox.
The Compass will compete in the overcrowded midsize SUV segment dominated by Japanese and Korean manufacturers.
There’s a choice of two four-cylinder engines, a 2.4-litre 129kW/229Nm petrol or a 2.0-litre 125kW/350Nm turbo-diesel.
Jeep claims the Compass offers best-in-class 4x4 off-road capabilities. 4WD variants utilise Jeep Active Drive and the Jeep Active Drive Low, the latter with 20:1 crawl ratio, each of which can send 100 percent of available torque to any one wheel.
Both Jeep Active Drive and Active Drive Low 4x4 systems include the Jeep SelecTerrain system, providing up to five modes (Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes, plus exclusive Rock mode on the Trailhawk model).
In addition, all 4x4 Compass models get the 4WD “Lock” function which locks the 4x4 traction permanently.
Head of Jeep brand at FCA Australia, Guillaume Drelon said: “In terms of refinement and the product’s offerings, Compass raises the bar in the compact- SUV segment with new levels of style, advanced technology, safety features, and most importantly, capability – it’s a versatile vehicle that will relish in Australian conditions and as such we are confident that it will be well received by the market.
“We’re proud to have positioned the Compass competitively, offering a diverse range with something for everyone – be it the urban consumer wanting a stylish SUV without the prestige price tag or the more adventurous minded buyer who wants to take the road less travelled with confidence.”
Unfortunately, autonomous emergency braking is not available on the entry models and is an option on higher grades.
