An updated 2018 Mazda CX-5 range has been revealed this week, Australia’s best-selling SUV gets revised engines and additional safety kit.
It’s a timely update for the CX-5, its best-selling status will come under future threat from an all-new Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester, while a freshened up Hyundai Tucson is also close.
The big news is reworked engines, the 2.2-litre diesel unit now utilises a new two-stage twin turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, rapid multi-stage combustion with a reworked combustion chamber and new piezo injectors which raises the engine’s compression ratio increases from 14.0:1 to 14.4:1.
The benefit of all this engineering is an increase in maximum power output from 129kW to 140W and in maximum torque from 420Nm to 450Nm.
A new water flow management system has also been added which Mazda says will quicken engine warm-up in a bid to deliver better real-world fuel economy. Diesel consumption on the combined cycle is now rated at 5.7L/100km (down 0.3L).
Moving to the 2.5-litre petrol engine, Mazda has added cylinder deactivation technology. The system shuts down cylinders one and four in light-load situations. As a result, fuel economy is said to see around a 20 per cent when cruising at 40km/h and five per cent when at a constant 80km/h.
The base 2.0-litre petrol engine gets a 1kW increase taking the total power output to 115kW.
Cabin tweaks in the form of additional safety kit include a 360-degree camera system on the range-topping Akera, while the Touring variant gets a new head-up display projected onto the windscreen doing away with the flip-up unit.
Prices have been lowered on the majority of CX-5 models - Maxx Sport and Touring variants see a $400 drop while $800 has come off the GT and Akera models.
