The 2018 Suzuki Swift Sport has been unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

An assortment of modifications in appearance, styling and an adjustment to the torque-to-weight ratio sees the Swift Sport land in warm hatch territory.

It’s out with the old 1.6L naturally-aspirated engine and in with a 1.4L Boosterjet turbo engine from the Vitara sibling. This addition makes the Swift Sport the fifth model in the line-up to feature a turbo engine. Word is the Swift Sport will output 103W and 230Nm. This will give it far more go than the rest of the new Swift range which packs a 1.0-litre turbo-three that develops 82kW/160Nm.

Swift Sport chief engineer Mr Masao Kobori said of the new car: “It’s lighter, sharper, and quicker. It’s more aggressive and emotive, but we’ve also refined the elements that make it practical to use every day—the clutch feel, the manual transmission shift throw, the seats and steering wheel. Everything that puts the driver at the heart of the experience.”

Safety and technology were also key considerations with the Swift Sport gaining Smartphone Linkage Display Audio Display unit with a multimedia 7-inch touchscreen display. This also incorporates satellite navigation. Advanced safety features extend to lane departure warning, weaving alert, adaptive cruise and high beam assist.

An Australian release date has not been confirmed, though local specifications and pricing are expected to be confirmed closer to that date.
