Order books will be open this week for the 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI Original which is due to arrive in January.

One might be forgiven for any confusion as another ‘Golf’ goes on the market, but Volkswagen claim they are giving the market what it wants, a three-door minimally embellished variant.

A three-door variant can be found in the high-spec DSG-only limited run GTI Performance Edition 1, which is part of the updated Golf 7.5 range, but it comes with a heftier price tag of $47,990 (all prices before on-road costs).

In contrast to this, the GTI Original will start at $37,490 for the six-speed manual or $39,990 for the DSG version.

The GTI Original will be powered by the same 169kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder found in the standard GTI.

The highlights of the GTI Original include Clark tartan upholstery, Front Assist with City Emergency Brake (City EB) and pedestrian monitoring, 18-inch Sevilla alloy wheels in black with red pinstripe, leather sports multi-function steering wheel, sports suspension, 'Original' badge on tailgate, driving profile selection, 8.0-inch infotainment system with App-Connect, Air Care dual-zone climate control air conditioning, LED headlights for high and low beam, LED front fog lights, rear view camera, parking distance sensors with manoeuvre braking on the front & rear, driver fatigue detection system and alarm system with interior monitoring.

The GTI Original will offer only one option in the Driver’s Assistance pack for $1,600.

Red or white will be the only colours available for the GTI Original which emulates the ‘no-frills’ persona of the car.
