Some starch has been added to the 2019 BMW X2 range with the unveiling of a new M35i variant.

The big news here is the engine, it’s the first M Performance 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol unit producing 225kW and 450Nm.

An M tuned eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four corners and there’s a locking differential on the front axle.

BMW claims the X2 M35i is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, however, to achieve that requires the use of launch control.

An M Sport suspension system is included which features an adaptive spring and damper combination with two manually adjustable modes. The rear axle has also been redesigned, however, BMW is yet to define what this means.

To differentiate the M35i from the wider X2 range is a more aggressive stance courtesy of an M Sport bodykit and a twin-tailpipe exhaust.

On the inside, an M Sport leather steering wheel with paddles is standard. Unfortunately, according to the press release, most of the M gear in the cabin such as M Sport seats and seatbelts are optional.

The X2 M35i is expected to reach Australia in the first half of 2019.
