Fans of cool things can get excited, the 2019 Suzuki Jimny is a confirmed starter Down Under and will be in Australian showrooms early next year.

It’s been a long time between drinks, the last new model hit the market 20 long years ago way back in 1988.

The Jimny is a car with plenty of heritage, the half-century beckons as the new generation model is readied. Unbelievably, it’s was originally launched in 1970.

Don’t let the Jimny’s diminutive size fool you, it’s a car with genuine off-road credentials. The Jimny is built on a ladder frame chassis with a dual-range four-wheel drive system. Local models will also feature hill-hold and hill-descent control.

Powering the new Jimny will be a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 75kW and 130Nm. It doesn’t sound like much but it’s only moving a kerb weight of 1135kg.

There’s no word yet on what transmissions will be offered locally, however, it’s highly likely both automatic and manual options will be available.

The Jimny will arrive better equipped than ever before, already confirmed is autonomous emergency braking, high beam assist, daytime running lights, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Suzuki Australia General Manager – Automobile, Mr Michael Pachota said the return of the legendary 4WD into the Australian market will be sure to impress.

“The Jimny is synonymous with the Suzuki brand and to have an all-new model on its way is something worth talking about. The Australian landscape will be a true test for the iconic 4WD and I have no doubt it will rise to the challenge.”

“I am very excited and highly anticipating the return of this legendary off-road compact SUV, in its all-new guise, to complement our already strong line-up of Suzuki vehicles in Australia,” said Mr Pachota.
