Confirmation has been received that the much-hyped 2019 Toyota Supra will be on sale in Australia towards the end of next year.

The new Supra will be the first vehicle sold in Australia to carry Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) branding, Toyota’s new performance sub-brand.

Developed alongside the new BMW Z4, the fifth-generation Supra, codenamed A90, will use a front-engine rear-wheel-drive combination. Power comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine which develops 220kW/450Nm and is mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is suggested the 0 to 100km/h sprint will be completed in under five seconds.

Although an official announcement hasn’t been made, expect a four-cylinder engine option to be available at some stage.

Though specific figures have not been detailed yet, the new Supra is said to have a significantly shorter wheelbase than the 86 sports car, with a lower centre of gravity, high body rigidity and 50-50 weight distribution to deliver better performance and handling.

With a focus on performance the new Supra is touting the ‘golden ratio’ of less than 1.6:1 for the combined wheelbase and track width. This is further enhanced by the new aluminium and steel composite frame which allows for high-performance suspension components to be fitted.

Distributing the available torque to the rear wheels will be an electronically controlled active differential with a high reduction gear.

High-performance tyres wrapped around specially designed wheel hubs with optimised camber and kinematics as well as Brembo four-pot callipers with large-diameter discs and an optimised brake booster will also be found on the Supra.

The camouflaged wrapping is expected to be taken off early next year, with a full reveal likely at the Detroit motor show.

Stay tuned for local specifications and pricing in the lead up to the Supra’s Australian launch later next year.
