Specifications and pricing for the 2019 Volkswagen Golf R have been announced, the range has been streamlined to two variants for MY19 with the arrival of a special edition that features the R Performance options.
The Golf R will be offered in hatch and wagon body styles with power coming from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that develops 213kW of power and 380Nm of torque. It’s matched with a seven-speed DSG and 4motion all-wheel drive with an extended electronic diff lock.
As the range-topping Golf variant, the spec sheet is extensive, leather trim, a digital instrument cluster, electric seats with memory, 9.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, LED headlights and 19-inch alloy wheels are all standard.
Volkswagen Australia will also offer 400 special editions which come equipped with a range of R Performance parts, previously available only to European buyers.
Headlining the Golf R special edition is a performance exhaust and rear muffler system. It’s made from a titanium alloy which means it’s 7kg lighter, but it’s all about the noise. Volkswagen claims the sound ranges from “unobtrusive to roaring.”
The special edition also features larger 340mm brakes with performance pads that deliver an improved response in wet condition and are less prone to fading. Sitting behind 19-inch gloss black alloys, the special edition brake package shaves an additional 2kg off the weight of the standard car.
Completing the R special edition’s equipment list is a Dynaudio 400W premium audio system, gloss black door mirrors and a subtle tailgate badge.
