Japanese luxury marque Infiniti has revealed the Prototype 10 concept ahead of its official unveiling at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Infiniti says the Prototype 10 concept “recaptures the spirit of early speedsters for an era of electrified performance.”

Back in January, Infiniti announced that from 2021 every model will feature some form of electric propulsion, be it hybrid or battery electric technology. The Prototype 10 signals the brand’s intent to develop electric models that are dynamically capable and performance orientated.

The car certainly has a driver focus with its monoposto (single-seat) cockpit that’s inspired by single-seat race cars.

Taking on the retro-roadster design means there is no passenger seat, in its place is a large vent that funnels air to cool the electric motor and batteries.

To call the cabin minimalist would be an understatement, a steering wheel, seat with a harness and pedals are it. Infiniti’s steer-by-wire, direct adaptive steering means there is no need for a steering column.

It’s extremely unlikely the Prototype 10 will ever graduate to production, Infiniti states the car is “purely a design study at this stage.”

What the Prototype 10 does show is the packaging flexibility that can be offered by EV powertrains. Engineers and designers will have a much greater level of creative freedom than those needing to work around traditional powertrains.
