Lexus has debuted the new luxury flagship crossover concept vehicle, the LF-1 Limitless featuring a fluid design and high performance.

Showcasing the latest technology, innovation and design, the Lexus LF-1 also offers fully autonomous driving capabilities.

Powertrain options could bring fuel cells, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, petrol or all-electric power delivery to the LF-1 Limitless which keeps the goal of every Lexus offering a dedicated electrified model or option by 2025 alive.

Lexus presented the LF-1 Limitless to the world at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit two decades after the first luxury crossover, the RX300, debuted in Detroit. The RX 300 remains the world’s top-selling luxury crossover despite tough competition.

Lexus International president Yoshihiro Sawa said, "This new crossover concept captures a future that involves a high level of dynamic capability and utility matched by a more exciting, emotional design that we hope challenges expectations in the category."

Developing the styling was CALTY Design Research in California which based its design on the concept of ‘molten katana’. This concept is based on the integration of organic liquid metal (molten) shapes and the influence of a traditional Japanese sword (katana) with its sharp edges.

CALTY Design Research president Kevin Hunter said, "The Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept incorporates imaginative technology while creating a strong emotional connection by improving the human experience for the driver and passengers."

For an athletic appearance, the LF-1 features an exaggerated dash-to-axle ratio (long bonnet, short front overhang) with the cabin sitting deep within the rear-wheel-drive chassis and between the 22-inch wheels. A familiar spindle grille is the catalyst point for radiating ridges which mimic magnetic waves. There is also a lack of chrome instead replaced by LED lighting around the grille.

At the rear, a split roof spoiler can be found as well as exhaust-looking air vents. Sculptural rear taillights extend from the rear and a large glass window extends over the rear seats for an expansive view.

On the inside, there is a lack of analogue knobs and buttons, replaced by motion-activated controls and a minimalist display that removes distraction from the driver.

Other highlights include a wide and unobstructed dashboard, expansive rear legroom and rear individual display screens for climate control and entertainment personalisation.

In terms of finish, the metallic interior trim reflects the same tinted titanium colour as the exterior though with a satin finish. The instrument panel and steering wheel feature accents and additional metallic accents through the rest of the cabin contrast against the dark Cocoa Bean leather trim. Covering the seats is Chiffon White perforated leather.

Technology highlights include Chauffeur mode (hands-free driving), four-dimensional navigation system with touch-responsive haptic controls as well as an additional haptic controller in the rear-seat centre console for passengers.
