Land Rover has unveiled the fifth-generation Discovery. The new 2017 Discovery is a full-sized SUV designed to be versatile and capable in all situations.
Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer said: “New Discovery redefines the large SUV. Land Rover’s design and engineering teams have revolutionised the Discovery DNA to create a highly desirable, extremely versatile and hugely capable premium SUV. We truly believe the result is a radical departure in design that will introduce the Discovery Family to a new, wider customer base.”
The new 2017 Discovery comes in four trim levels, the S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury. There will also be a special First Edition available to only 2400 customers globally.
Buyers will be able to purchase the Discovery in five or seven-seat configurations, with the choice of three diesel engine options.
The engines available include the 132kW 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder Ingenium engine, which offers 430Nm of torque, an upgraded version which produces 177kW and 500Nm, and the range-topping 190kW 3.0-litre single-turbo V6 diesel engine offering 600Nm of torque. All engines in the new Land Rover Discovery are matched with a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to all four wheels.
The new Land Rover Discovery has also recently achieved the maximum 5-star safety rating from ANCAP.
“The Discovery earned its 5-star safety rating showing strengths in structure, design and equipment,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Mr. James Goodwin.
This rating is achieved thanks to the standard fitment of safety features such as autonomous emergency braking and head-protecting airbags for multiple rows, adaptive LED headlamps, Driver Condition Monitor, lane keep assist, park assist and 360-degree HD surround camera system.
In the entry-level Discovery S, standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, cloth trim and an eight-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system.
Stepping up into the SE grade, customers will get grained leather trim seats with the front seats getting eight-way electronic adjustable seats, dual-zone climate control and the inclusion of satellite navigation.
The HSE brings 20-inch alloy wheels, tri-zone climate control, keyless entry, powered tailgate and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
At the top-of-the-range, the HSE Luxury models get Windsor leather, 16-way electrically adjusted front seats which are heated as well as cooled, a cooled centre console and an upgraded infotainment system with digital TV, and an upgraded audio system.
Other features of the new Discovery include a stepped roofline, which optimizes headroom, Intelligent Seat Fold technology, which allows the seating configuration to be controlled via a smartphone, 3,500kg towing capacity and Advanced Tow Assist technology, up to nine USB ports, up to six 12-volt charging points and an in-car WiFi hotspot for up to eight devices.
As always, in the premium segment, there is also a long list of options available for the Discovery that come at an extra cost.
