The official opening of the new state-of-the-art BMW autonomous driving campus was celebrated by the Bavarian car maker recently.

Focused on offering a greater capacity for innovation and increased development efficiency, the project was first floated 15 months ago as a way of streamlining the fields of vehicle connectivity and automated driving in a single location.

With roughly 23,000 square meters of office space, there is room for 1,800 employees as BMW Group pushes to develop highly automated vehicles within the new campus which was built in Unterschleißheim.

IT specialists and software developers in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analysis are currently being recruited to work at the new campus.

The campus itself will offer ‘new working environments’ such as open-plan, intelligent and flexible office space. BMW is hoping this space will offer benefits for employees such as flexibility, efficiency, a high level of autonomy and proximity. For example, a software developer could immediately test out freshly written code in a vehicle that is just a short walk away.

With the arrival of new players adding competition to the marketplace and the pace of innovation rapidly accelerating, BMW felt that a modern working environment and cutting-edge development facility would be a crucial asset for the company’s long-term sustainability and innovative capability.
