New car sales data for March 2017 has been released.

Figures released today shows 105,410 new vehicles were sold in March.

In February, SUVs overtook passenger cars and have consolidated that result, SUVs are now the most popular market category.

Toyota continues to be the Usain Bolt of the Australian new car market with 19,652 sales. This figure represents a gain of 10.1 per cent compared with March last year. There is plenty of daylight between Toyota and its nearest rival, fellow Japanese maker, Mazda.

As the nation’s biggest selling brand of imported cars, Mazda notched up sales 10,472 cars.

Another manufacturer from the land of the rising sun Mitsubishi was able to hold onto fourth spot in the overall market for the second consecutive month. A brilliant result of 7583 units was achieved in March. Mitsubishi sold 1384 ASXs, 1609 Outlanders and 2670 Tritons.

We suspect the Triton’s sharp pricing is attracting buyers that may have previously considered the Colorado. The increased price of Holden’s new workhorse hasn’t been as well received as they would have liked.

The Ranger continues to carry the weight of Ford in Australia. Ford’s passenger cars and SUVs continue to struggle for traction with local buyers.

Remarkably, Australia’s ute obsession shows no signs of easing. Three utes currently sit in the top five, the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi Triton.

The new generation Impreza is keeping Subaru moving with March sales of 1168 up a massive 79.7 per cent. Subaru has been one of the market's better performers in percentage terms in the first quarter of 2017, March sales of 5006 vehicles was an impressive total.

Despite finally taking steps to address falling sales, Jeep only managed 852 registrations. The Jeep There and Back Guarantee may have come too late for many.
