Australia’s new car market remains on track for another record-breaking year. According to figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), 95,763 new cars were sold in October representing a 2.6 per cent increase over the same month last year.
The yearly tally now sits at 984,931 units with two months remaining to run. The market is currently running 0.5 per cent higher than the same stage in 2016.
SUVs continue to be the most popular body style capturing 38.5 per cent market share. The Mazda CX-5 is the country’s favourite SUV. Passenger cars aren’t far behind, holding a 38 per cent share of the market.
October saw Hyundai return to number one with the new i30 notching up 3983 sales. Ford’s time at the top didn’t last long, the Ranger fell to fourth spot.
Toyota continue to dominate the local new car arena, the Japanese titan has a sales lead of over 80,000 units. The HiLux is on track to be the top-selling vehicle for the second consecutive year, while the ever-popular Corolla should hold on to be Australia’s best-selling passenger car.
Toyota’s LandCruiser range secured eighth spot, there is plenty of conjecture suggesting the LandCruiser should be split and categorised according to body shape. It’s not the worst idea we have heard.
In a remarkable set of figures, Toyota dealers have sold more than 180,000 new vehicles this year.
Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said, "Toyota's sales so far this year are the strongest since the mining boom in 2008, so it will be business as usual through to December 31 and beyond.”
Premium brand Lexus had a storming month, total deliveries rose to 870 vehicles, a gain of 36.6 per cent compared with September.
Another winner was Subaru, sales are up 13.2 per cent year-to-date (YTD). October was Subaru's 34th consecutive month of sales growth.
On the back of the desirable 3008 SUV, Peugeot’s numbers were up 51 per cent, albeit from a relatively low starting point.
