Porsche has unveiled the new track-focused 935 at the 'Rennsport Reunion' motorsport event at Laguna Seca Raceway in California.

Limited to only 77 units, the 935 is based on the 911 GT2 RS with engineering and design changes to pay tribute to the 935/78 Le Mans race car, dubbed 'Moby Dick' due to its elongated shape, massive fairings and white base colour.

The majority of the body panels are made of carbon-fibre composite parts (CFRP) with various hints to some of Porsche’s greatest hits - the LED rear lights on the rear wing were adopted from the 919 Hybrid LMP1 race car, the side mirrors are taken from the current Le Mans-winning 911 RSR and the exposed titanium tailpipes were modelled on the Porsche 908 from 1968.

Designers have continued the history lesson throughout the interior, the knob on the gearshift lever has a laminated wood finish reminiscent of racers such as the 917, the 909 Bergspyder and the Carrera GT, while the carbon steering wheel is taken from the current 911 GT3 R.

A safety cage combined with a racing bucket seat and a six-point safety harness is standard, but a passenger seat will cost extra.

Dimensionally, the 935 is 4865mm long, 2034mm wide (including mirrors), and 1359mm high with a 2457mm wheelbase. Porsche enthusiasts will note it’s larger than the 911 GT2 RS in every measurement.

Powering the 935 is the 3.8-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo engine producing 515kW, Porsche says the unit is largely identical to the one driving the 911 GT2 RS. A seven-speed PDK gearbox sends drive to the rear wheels. There’s also a limited-slip differential.

Stopping power comes from six-piston aluminium monobloc racing callipers on the front with 380mm discs. The rear axle is fitted with four-piston callipers and 355mm discs.

The 18-inch wheels are wrapped in Michelin 29/65 (front) and 31/71 (rear) racing rubber.

The 936 will be equipped with Porsche Stability Management including traction control as well as an anti-lock braking system (ABS) which can be adjusted or disabled via a map switch.

All 77 will be finished in Agate gray with the pictured Martini livery available as an option.

European pricing has been announced, the 935 will cost a cool €701,948 which is approximately $1.13 million Aussie dollars.
