Porsche and Audi have announced they will co-develop new platforms for future models.

Both brands sit under the umbrella of the Volkswagen group and now plan to cooperate even more closely.

Audi and Porsche have a long history of sharing technology and platforms. Without cooperation between these two brands, Porsche would not have the Macan or Cayenne SUV range. These models have their roots in Audi DNA.

The backbone of this official development relationship is for Audi and Porsche to become the pacesetters of new electric and autonomous vehicles.

"The best brains of both companies will together set the technical course for the future," stated Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG.

"We are united by many shared values, above all, by our pursuit of the best solutions and the best offerings for our customers."

"Together, we will make faster progress in the race for the mobility of the future. We will utilise the expertise of both companies and take advantage of synergies," said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG.

"We will cooperate wherever it makes sense. But we will also be very careful to maintain the differentiation between our brands. A Porsche is always a Porsche, and that will remain so in the future."

While making the relationship official might move things along faster, it is more than likely they would be working closely together anyway.

The Volkswagen group have very lofty ambitions when it comes to electric cars. Volkswagen and Audi are planning a fleet of electric models over the next decade, and Porsche recently announced it will manufacture the all-electric Mission E sedan.

Let’s start a Car Conversation, is this a genuine announcement or were Audi and Porsche going to continue their history of collaboration without an official agreement?
