Toyota has revealed that the 86 sports coupe has surpassed 20,000 sales on Australian soil which just happens to coincide with the release of the new Apollo Blue paint hue.
Available on GTS variants fitted with a performance kit only, the stunning colour stands out from the crowd and celebrates the first Toyota sports car to achieve over 20,000 sales since the Celica did so in 1975.
With an average annual sale rate of more than 3,300 86 coupes sold over the past six years since it was introduced, this represents a higher average than the Celica which only managed to sell around 3,200 cars per year in its 35 years on the market.
In comparison, the legendary Toyota Supra only managed to sell 2,895 cars locally with the MR2 slightly bettering the sales figures with a total of 3,451.
Toyota Australia's Vice President Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley said, "The sales success of the Toyota 86 has been impressive, and it is just the start of a new era of excitement within our company.”
"Toyota's designers and engineers are continuing to display their commitment to more desirable styling and greater driving enjoyment with cars like the latest Camry, the upcoming Corolla and next year's RAV4.
"This passion is also evident in Toyota's decision to resurrect the famous Supra name in a car that is under development and slated for launch soon."

The optional performance kit which is available for all 86 variants brings larger Brembo performance brakes, specially tuned Sachs performance dampers and anthracite-coloured 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels for $2,200 on the GTS and $2,900 on the GT.

All 86 models include seven airbags, premium three-spoke steering wheel and premium shift lever, auto-levelling LED headlamps, LED DRLs, limited-slip differential, air-conditioning, multi-information display, satellite navigation, reversing camera and hill-start assist control.
