The third-generation 2018 Bentley Continental GT has been revealed, there’s a new look, more kit and more power via an enhanced version of the brand’s W12 engine.
The all-new Continental GT hasn’t strayed too far from the formula that made it a success. The masculine looks are still present, as is the familiar grille and headlights. Some of the GT’s curves have been squared off to add a little more athleticism to the design.
At this stage, Bentley has only released details of one engine, a new take on the 6.0-litre W12 which is now designated TSI. This is a brute capable of producing 466kW of power and 900Nm of torque. This represents an increase of 32kW and 180Nm over the outgoing unit.
Bentley claims the new model can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, which makes it faster than the old car. There has been a slight reduction (3km/h) in top speed, if floored, the new model can hit 333km/h. There is less mass to move, the Continental has shed 80kg.
An eight-speed dual-clutch transmission will be used to improve shifting times and efficiency. The new Continental GT claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 12.2L/100km, the old model was rated at 14.2/100km. If the figure is achievable in real world driving, it’s a significant improvement.
There’s a new Active All-Wheel-Drive System to replace the outgoing car’s 40:60 power delivery split. In the new model, the torque split between the front and rear will be determined by the driving situation, predominantly the new GT will use a rear drive bias.
Being a car to cross continents, keeping the ride plush is important. To keep things smooth, Bentley will use an advanced 48-volt roll control system. The system controls and adjusts the electronic actuators on the anti-roll bar of each axle to improve the Continental’s handling and ride comfort.
On the inside, the GT takes some styling cues from the Bentayga SUV. Leading the changes is a new infotainment system that features a 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay. Buyers can also option a digital instrument panel, no doubt borrowed from Audi.
Of course, owners will still enjoy ultimate personalisation of their car via the Mulliner Bespoke program. Choices are practically limitless, there are 17 exterior paint colours, with up to 70 hues available in the extended range.
Interestingly, Bentley will offer two technology option packs at launch.
The City Specification includes hands-free boot opening, pedestrian warning, traffic-sign recognition and city braking systems as well as a top-view camera.
The Touring Specification pack offers adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam assist, active lane assist, a heads-up display, night vision with an infrared camera, and pre-sense braking.
The 2018 Bentley Continental GT debuts in the metal at the Frankfurt motor show next month. An Australian release date, along with specifications and pricing are yet to be announced.
