Details have been released for the 2018 Lamborghini Urus SUV, the Italian brand’s first attempt at an SUV since the LM002 of the late 80s.
Wearing the Lamborghini badge means the Urus needs some genuine performance credentials. Power comes from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine capable of 478 kW at 6000rpm and a massive 850Nm at 2250-4500rpm.
With a kerb weight under 2200kg, Lamborghini claims the Urus has the best power to weight ratio of any SUV on the market. The Urus accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 12.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 305 km/h. So yeah, it’s fast.
The Urus will have an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. There’s also a Torsen central self-locking differential. Torque is split 40/60 to the independent front/rear axle as standard, with a dynamic maximum torque of 70 per cent to the front or 87 per cent to the rear, enhancing traction to the axle with higher ground friction.
The Urus features active torque vectoring and three settings for off-road driving, Neve (snow), Terra (off-road) and Sabbia (sand).
Bringing the Urus to a stop is standard Carbon Ceramic Brakes (CCB), measuring 440 x 40 mm at the front with 10 piston callipers and 370 x 30 mm at the rear with six-pots.
Wheel options range from 21- to 23-inch, wrapped in a choice of summer, winter, all-season, all-terrain and sport tyres from Pirelli. Sizes climb to 285/35 on the front and 325/30 on the rear.
Dimensionally, the Urus is 5112mm long, 2016mm wide, 1638mm high with a 3003mm wheelbase.
On the inside, the Urus will get the new twin display infotainment system form the new Audi A8 that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a digital TFT display (otherwise know as Virtual Cockpit).
The rear bench seat can be lowered to extend the boot space from 616L to 1596L, so the Urus can claim some legitimate practicality.
For brave buyers willing to get their Urus dirty, Lamborghini will offer an optional off-road pack that includes specific metal-reinforced bumpers and additional underfloor protection for off-roading in snow, forest or dunes.
In terms of price, the Lamborghini Urus will start at $390,000 plus on-road costs.
For local Urus buyers, Australian deliveries are expected to commence in autumn of 2018.
