The 2019 BMW 8 Series convertible has been officially revealed ahead of a global launch next year.

With the exception of the roof, the convertible specifications mirror that of the 8 Series coupe.

BMW has opted for a fully-electric folding soft-top, which comes in black as standard with Anthracite Silver available as an option. The roof opens and closes in 15 seconds and can be operated at speeds of up to 50km/h.

When opened, the soft-top stows away under a cover trimmed to match the dashboard and door panels.

The convertible’s interior looks identical to the coupe. BMW’s new Live Cockpit Professional consisting of a fully customisable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch infotainment screen powered by BMW’s latest Operating System 7.0 is standard.

Like the coupe, two turbocharged engine choices will be available at launch – one diesel and one petrol.

The 840d xDrive is powered by a 3.0-litre 235kW/680Nm turbo-diesel inline six which can propel the car from 0 to 100km/h in 5.2 seconds.

The M850i xDrive packs a 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 developing 390kW and 750Nm. From a standstill, it can hit triple figures in 3.9 seconds.

In each variant, power is sent to a rear-biased all-wheel drive system through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Standard safety equipment includes a head-up display and BMW’s Driving Assistant, which brings autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and rear collision warning.

Parking Assistant is also standard which adds a rear-view camera and parking sensors.

Adaptive cruise control with stop & go, steering assist and lane keep assist are available on the options list.

The 8 Series convertible is due to go on sale in Europe from March 2019, with pricing to be announced.
