Mitsubishi Australia has confirmed specifications and pricing for the 2019 Triton range, the popular ute now features new active safety technology, a new six-speed automatic gearbox and a much-needed style upgrade.

There’s plenty riding on the new Triton, locally, it’s sales are only topped by the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.

Incorporated into the front end of the new Triton is the new-generation ‘dynamic shield’ design language which brings a high engine hood line and elevated, tougher-looking lamps.

There are also extended wheel flares, bright accents and a new lighting and bumper arrangement which is said to convey a meaner stance.

Internally, Mitsubishi has aimed for a more modern aesthetic with soft-touch materials, contrast stitching and silver accents. Higher grades will get a digital driver’s display, rear-view camera, keyless entry and push-button start.

The familiar 2.4-litre turbo-diesel is carried over, it’s still good for 133kW of power at 3500rpm and 430Nm of torque at 2500rpm.

The current Triton’s six-speed manual is also carried over, however, the five-speed automatic has been replaced with a new six-speed transmission.

Mitsubishi will continue to offer the entry-level Triton GLX single-cab-chassis with a 2.4-litre 94kW/194Nm petrol engine paired with a manual gearbox.

4WD models will be fitted with Super-Select 4WD or Easy-Select 4WD with new drive modes for both 4WD systems aiming to deliver improved off-road performance.

Other improvements include larger rear dampers and upgraded brakes with larger front discs and calliper pistons.

Ground clearance is a low 220mm, a number which won't please off-road enthusiasts, however,  Mitsubishi is claiming the new design has slightly improved the approach and departure angles.

The maximum payload drops from 965kg to 906kg, while towing capacity remains unchanged (and slightly off the pace) at 3100kg.

The Triton now offers much-improved safety tech, GLX+ and GLX with the 'ADAS' options get Forward Collision Mitigation which includes autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning.

Moving to the GLS adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beam, lane change assist and an ultrasonic mis-acceleration mitigation system  (UMMS) which is clever enough to cut engine power if the driver accidentally accelerates towards an object from a standstill without braking.

Mitsubishi is launching the Triton with a seven-year/150,000km warranty offer until June 30, 2019. Triton owners will also be supported with a four-year roadside assistance coverage and three years of capped price servicing.

The additional after sales coverage doesn’t match that of the recently launched SsangYong Musso which gets a seven-year, unlimited kilometre warranty, seven years’ roadside assistance and seven years’ service price menu.

The 2019 Mitsubishi Triton range will begin arriving in showrooms in January.
