Peugeot Australia has announced it will launch an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission beginning with the new special edition 308 GT later this month.

Co-developed with Japanese transmission specialist Aisin, the new eight-speed, dubbed ‘EAT8’ offers “improved shift quality and a reduction in fuel consumption of up to seven per cent.”

Other features include enhanced performance of the stop/start function at speeds of up to 20 km/h, a 2.5kg weight reduction compared to the older ‘EAT6’ six-speed and coasting ability from 25km/h.

The first model to receive the new transmission will be the limited edition 308 GT variant, which is scheduled for a late-July introduction.

The 308 GT is powered by a 165kW 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. A full rundown of Australian specifications will be available shortly.

Following the 308 GT, the new transmission will be available on the 508 GT range in August, while 3008 and 5008 GT SUVs with turbo-diesel power will get the new auto in the coming months.
