The new 2019 Suzuki Jimny has officially launched in Australia priced from $23,990 plus on-road costs.
The Jimny continues to use a boxy design built on a ladder frame body with a proper low range transfer gear, which can be easily switched from 2H (2WD-high gear), 4H (4WD-high gear) and 4L (4WD-low gear).
Dimensionally, the new Jimny is 3645mm long which is 30mm shorter than the previous generation which provides approach and departure angles of 37 and 49 degrees respectively. The Jimny also comes in at 1645mm wide (up 45mm) and 1725mm high with a 2250mm wheelbase. With all the seats up, the cargo capacity is a lowly 85 litres, folding the rear seats flat increases the boot space to a useable 377 litres.
This latest incarnation of the legendary Jimny stays true to the core characteristics of the original 4x4 vehicle which has enjoyed worldwide popularity for nearly 50 years.
Suzuki is only offering the new Jimny in one trim level which is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine offering 75kW of power and 130Nm of torque, mated with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
It won't set any records in terms of speed, however, it only weighs 1075kg. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is a claimed 6.4L/100km for the manual and 6.9L/100km for the automatic.
Standard equipment includes daytime running lights, front fog lamps, 15-inch alloy wheels, a 7.0-inch infotainment system with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth and privacy glass.
Dissapointibly, there’s no height adjustment for the driver’s seat and the steering wheel is lacking reach adjustment.
Safety wise, the Jimny gets autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, hill descent control, six airbags, high beam assist, electronic stability control and a rear-view camera as standard, however, ANCAP has only awarded the car a below average three-star safety rating.
Six body colours will be available including the newly developed Kinetic Yellow, which is exclusive to the new Jimny and joins Jungle Green, Medium Gray and Superior White.
Two-tone colour options include the new Kinetic Yellow, Brisk Blue Metallic and Chiffon Ivory Metallic all matched with Bluish Black Pearl. Metallic paint attracts a $500 premium with two-tone $1250 extra.
Suzuki offers capped-price servicing, however, the intervals are set at an inconvenient six-months. Buyers who service on time at a dealer will enjoy five-year warranty coverage.
The 2019 Suzuki Jimny will be in Australian showrooms from January 26th, 2019.
