Toyota Australia has outlined the safety package that will feature on the 2019 RAV4, due to go on sale in the second quarter of 2019, the brand is promising class-leading safety across the 11-model range.

All variants of the new RAV4 will get autonomous emergency braking (pre-collision safety system in Toyota speak) with pedestrian and daylight cyclist detection, active cruise control, road sign assist, lane departure alert and automatic high beam.

Also included as standard is blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors and seven airbags.

Depending on trim level, models equipped with an automatic transmission (torque converter of CVT) also score lane keep assist and stop and go capability as part of the active cruise control.

Aside from safety, Toyota also confirmed, the new RAV4 will be offered in 11 different models with a choice of four grade levels, three new powertrains and the option of front or all-wheel drive.

The big news is the availability of a hybrid powertrain which will be available in six models across Toyota’s usual GX, GXL and Cruiser trim levels. The 2.5-litre petrol-electric unit produces 155kW and is mated to a CVT automatic.

An entry-level 2.0-litre 127kW/207Nm petrol engine will also be offered in GX, GXL and Cruiser grades. The 2.0-litre engine will only be available with front-wheel drive.

Toyota will also offer a special Edge grade that features more rugged exterior styling and an "adventure" focus. The Edge is powered by a 2.5-litre 152kW/243Nm petrol engine that sends drive to a mechanical AWD system through a traditional torque converter automatic.

Toyota Australia's vice president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said: "The RAV4 was one of the original SUVs but customer tastes have changed and today, its popular appeal stems not just from its AWD capability, but its flexible, spacious interior and refined, car-like driving manners.”

"With a choice of six different hybrid models, along with front-wheel drive petrol and the adventure-focused AWD Edge variants, Toyota is giving customers a chance to re-discover the RAV4 in a whole new light as a highly efficient, refined and versatile SUV to provide for all lifestyles and needs," he added.
