BMW’s M division has revealed the new X5 M and X6 M models, along with tuned-up Competition variants ahead of a public debut at the Los Angeles motor show.
Both the X5 M and X6 M are powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine producing 441kW and 750Nm. Competition variants get a 37kW power bump for a total of 460kW.
An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the brand’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive system.
There’s also an active M differential, adaptive M suspension, M-specific steering, M compound brakes, and 21-inch M light-alloy wheels included as standard. Competition models add an M Sport exhaust system and larger 22-inch wheels at the rear.
In terms of performance, the standard cars can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, while the Competition variants hit 100 km/h from rest in 3.8 seconds.
The exterior of both new M models feature large air intakes in the protruding front aprons, an M specific kidney grille with black double bars, M gills on the fenders, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors, flared arches finished in the body colour, and exhaust tailpipes integrated into the rear apron.
Competition versions can be identified by black finished kidney grille surrounds, M gills, exterior mirror caps, model badges, the diffuser trim in the rear apron and exhaust tips. Buyers can option a carbon-fibre engine cover, mirror caps and a rear spoiler.
The interior gets M Sport seats trimmed in leather, M leather steering wheel, M gearshift selector, and M-specific read-outs for the digital instrument cluster and head-up display.
Extended Merino leather upholstery, an Alcantara headliner, model-specific door sill plates and a model nameplate on the centre console are added to the Competition variants.
Standard specification also includes BMW Live Cockpit Professional with navigation and Intelligent Personal Assistant.
BMW Australia has confirmed the Competition variants will be available locally in the second quarter of 2020, expect full specifications and pricing to be announced closer to the launch date.
