Enthusiasts rejoice! Porsche has confirmed a four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine will power new variants of the 718 Cayman and Boxster.
The new 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 will arrive in Australia from mid-2020 priced from $172,400 and $175,200 plus on-road costs respectively.
The engine in question is the mid-mounted 294kW 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated six-cylinder unit found in the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4. It screams all the way to 7800rpm.
It’s a welcomed ugrade over the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 269kW and 430Nm Porsche uses in ‘regular’ versions of the 718 GTS.
To further please the purists, GTS 4.0 variants will get a six-speed manual transmission.
Porsche claims both cars can sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 293km/h.
Efficiency hasn’t been forgotten, adaptive cylinder control is included which switches off one of the two cylinder banks at low loads. Direct fuel injection with piezo injectors and a variable intake system also work to cut fuel use.
Both cars sit 20mm lower thanks to the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports suspension.
Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a mechanical limited-slip rear differential, the Sport Chrono package, a twin tailpipe sports exhaust system, Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and Porsche Active Drivetrain Mounts (PADM) are all included as standard.
Each variant rides on 20-inch light-alloy wheels finished in satin-gloss black wrapped in high-performance tyres (235/35 at the front and 265/35 at the rear).
Visually, the exterior of the GTS 4.0 models are differentiated by a dark contrasting spoiler lip, air intake, front fog light lenses, rear light lenses and redesigned lower rear bumper.
On the inside, there’s plenty of dark Alcantara, embroidered GTS emblems in the headrests, carbon-fibre trim, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen running the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system.
Additional standard equipment on Australian delivered cars includes cruise control, seat heating, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, light design package, alarm system with interior surveillance, and a windscreen with grey top tint.
ParkAssist with a rear-view camera, the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) with automatically dimming mirror, satellite navigation, digital radio and Apple CarPlay are also standard.
Both cars are available to order now with deliveries expected to commence in mid-2020.
