Australian details have been announced for the new 2020 Toyota Yaris range ahead of a local launch in August.

At launch, three model grades will be available – Ascent Sport, SX and ZR – with both petrol and hybrid powertrain options. A GR performance model will also join the range.

Power will come from a new 88kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine matched to a CVT automatic. Toyota says the new engine reduces fuel consumption by 15 per cent with the Yaris sipping 4.9L/100km on the combined cycle.

The petrol-electric hybrid option will develop 85kW of power and sip 3.3L/100km.

Safety gets a boost with the autonomous emergency braking system able to detect vehicles and pedestrians in the day or at night. Cyclists can also be detected during the day.

Traffic sign recognition, lane-keeping assist and a new front-row centre airbag are also included.

The entry-level Ascent Sport gets 15-inch steel wheels, LED daytime running lamps, 60/40 split-fold rear seats, a USB port and a 7.0-inch display screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Moving to the mid-range SX adds satellite navigation, keyless entry, push-button start, 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and tail-lights, piano-black and satin interior finishes, leather-accented steering wheel and digital meters.

Top-spec ZR models get 16-inch alloys, a rear spoiler, a head-up display, blind-spot monitor, front and rear parking sensors, sports seats and pedals, piano black trim and red inserts. Petrol variants also get paddle shifters.

Buyers will have the option of twelve exterior paint options while ZR grades have the option of a black or white roof with selected colours.

The new 2020 Toyota Yaris range is set to arrive in Australian dealerships from August with local pricing to be announced closer to the launch date.
