Australian specs and pricing have been announced for the new 2021 Volkswagen Golf Mk8 range ahead of a showroom arrival in May.
At launch, Volkswagen will offer four grades: Golf, Life, R-Line and the GTI hot hatch.
Prices start at $29,350 plus on-road costs for the base Golf manual and top out at $53,100 plus on-roads for the GTI.
In due course, the range will be expanded to include the Golf R all-wheel drive flagship.
Dimensionally, the Golf now measures in at 4284mm long, 1789mm wide and 1456mm tall with a 2636mm wheelbase. For context, when compared to the outgoing model, the Mk8 is 26mm longer, 10mm narrower, 4mm taller with a 16mm longer wheelbase.
The base Golf, Life and R-Line are all powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque. Drive goes to the front wheels through a six-speed manual (in the entry car) or an eight-speed torque converter automatic. That looks like the end of the DSG in the regular range.
In the GTI, power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol developing 180kW of power and 370Nm of torque, it’s matched to a seven-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission. It also gets an electronic locking front differential as standard.
