The Australian new car market continued its slide in November according to data released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

In November, 84,708 sales were recorded, a decrease of 9.8 per cent when compared to the same month last year.

On a year-to-date basis, total sales for 2019 now sit at 978,628 units, an 8.2 per cent decrease on year-to-date 2018.

Tony Weber, chief executive of the FCAI, said it was the twentieth consecutive month of decreasing sales. “It is a tough market – full stop,” he said.

“The industry has been looking for a lift for some time now and has activated multiple levers to achieve some stimulation, including incentives, sales and special vehicle editions. However, the appetite for new vehicles remains suppressed.”

“On the bright side, there has never been a better time to purchase a new vehicle.”

“With over 60 brands and more than 350 models, the Australian market is one of the most competitive in the world. This is great news for consumers who have an abundance of choice and pricing options when it comes to selecting a new vehicle.”

SUVs were again the dominant segment with 39,541 registrations (down 1.1 per cent), followed by passenger cars with 23,022 sales (down 21.3 per cent), and light commercials with 19,065 sales (down 8.8 per cent).

Toyota remained the best-selling marque for the month with 16,954 sales (down 7.2 per cent), followed by Mitsubishi with 6861 (down 1.3 per cent), Hyundai with 6821 (down 13.3 per cent), Mazda with 6167 (down 30.7 per cent), and Kia with 5141 (up 10.7 per cent).

With plenty of new metal, Mercedes-Benz jumped into the top ten with 3407 sales (up a whopping 39.2 per cent).

Holden’s 2668 sales weren’t enough to keep the brand in the top ten, the result was a drop of 47.9 per cent when compared to November 2018. With the boss leaving this week, things are well beyond grim.

Smaller brands beating the market include Renault (1024 up 45.7 per cent), Skoda (618 up 30.4 per cent), Land Rover (629 up 16.7 per cent) and MG (866 up 126.1 per cent).

Audi reversed a run of outs thanks to new models, securing 1608 sales (up 11.7 per cent), while BMW moved 1731 units (up 5.7 per cent).

The most popular cars were the Toyota Hilux (3687),  Ford Ranger (3491), Mitsubishi Triton (3123), Hyundai i30 (2339) and the Toyota RAV4 (2316).
