Australian specs and pricing have been confirmed for the new BMW 4 Series Convertible range ahead of a showroom arrival in the first quarter of 2021.
Like the Coupe, the Convertible range will consist of three models: 420i, 430i and M440i xDrive with prices starting from $89,900 plus on-road costs.
As with the latest Z4, BMW has reverted to a fabric roof for the 4 Series which is said to be 40 per cent lighter than the outgoing model’s metal roof. Buyers can have the roof in either black or Anthracite Silver.
The roof can be opened and closed in 18 seconds and can be operated at speeds of up to 50km/h.
Dimensionally, the new 4 Series Convertible measures 4768mm long, 1852mm wide and 1384mm tall with the roof up, with a 2851mm wheelbase. Luggage space is 385L with the roof up, dropping to 300L with the top down.
The entry-level 420i is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 135kW and 300Nm. The 430i also uses a 2.0-litre turbo unit, however, it’s tuned to deliver 190kW and 400Nm. Both are matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear wheel drive.
Flagship M440i xDrive variants use a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine that develops 285kW of power and 500Nm of torque. An eight-speed automatic sends power to a rear-biased all-wheel drive system.
In terms of performance, the 420i can sprint from 0-100km/h in 8.2 seconds, while the 430i can complete the dash in 6.2 seconds. The M440i xDrive takes 4.9 seconds to hit triple figures.
