Specifications and pricing have been revealed for the 2019 Toyota RAV4 range, the fifth-generation of the popular SUV will be offered in 11 variants priced from $30,640 plus on-road costs.
Across the 11 variants, buyers have a choice of four trim levels with three powertrains - two petrol and a petrol-electric hybrid - along with the option of front- or all-wheel drive.
The four model grades begin with the familiar GX, GXL and Cruiser names, joined by a new flagship Edge model.
Opening the range is front wheel drive petrol variants of the GX, GXL and Cruiser. Power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit producing 127kW and 203Nm. It’s matched to a CVT automatic. The entry-level GX can be had with a six-speed manual gearbox. Fuel consumption is listed as 6.5L/100km on the combined cycle.
For those chasing efficiency, the hybrid powertrain is offered in 2WD and AWD versions across the GX, GXL and Cruiser grades with prices starting at $35,140 plus on-roads.
The hybrid system consists of a 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor generator that drives through a CVT auto. It develops outputs of 160kW for 2WD variants and 163kW for the AWD versions.
The combined fuel consumption figures for the hybrids look brilliant at 4.7L/100km for 2WD models while AWD versions use 4.8L/100km.
AWD hybrid variants utilise an additional rear motor generator to provide up to 80 per cent of the torque to the rear axle.
The range-topping Edge grade is exclusively available with a 2.5-litre 152kW/243Nm petrol engine that sends drive to a mechanical AWD system through a traditional torque converter automatic. On the combined cycle fuel consumption is rated at 7.3L/100km.
In normal driving conditions, the Edge’s AWD system sends all the torque to the front but can use a 50:50 split across front and rear wheels when necessary. There’s also a multi-terrain select system that offers different modes for mud & sand, rock & dirt and snow.
A dynamic torque vectoring system is also included, it controls the torque delivered to the left or right rear wheels depending on the road surface conditions.
Unique front and rear bumpers, wheel arch mouldings, front grille, fog lamp surrounds and 19-inch alloy wheels differentiate the Edge from the wider range. The interior gets faux leather trim along with heated and ventilated front seats.
The new RAV4 is the latest model to be underpinned by the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) that also provides the foundation of the Camry, Corolla and CH-R. It will also be used for the next-generation Kluger.
The new platform has seen the wheelbase extended by 30mm to 2690mm, while the car has been widened at the front by up to 35mm and up to 55mm at the rear. This translates to an extra 65mm of load space which lifts the cargo capacity to 580 litres.
The Toyota Safety Sense suite is standard across the range and includes autonomous emergency braking with day/night pedestrian and day cyclist detection, active cruise control, lane departure warning, speed sign recognition and automatic high beam.
Technophiles will be happy to know the new RAV4 will be the first Toyota in Oz to offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, however, it won’t be available until later this year. Those who purchase a RAV4 prior to this can have the tech retrofitted.
